After going over all of this for a few hours I decided to stop and not push to hard. I would think there stress level should have killed them long ago. Now that I've revisited that photo of the unit on my car, it's conceivably possible that if what ever is supposed to hold the unit itself in place came loose enough that the weight of the unit would rotate the whole thing downward, that would have the same effect as the control arm being pushed upward under typical circumstances.
